GARDENING IN NEW ENGLAND

A cornerstone of my travel library

Fascinating Photo History

Lively memoir of New England boyhood

Very helpful !!

A Surreal, Wild RideStay awake on this wild ride. You won't be traveling in a straight line for long. You'll veer off into evolutionary biology, or Mafia drug deals, or pyromania, or the political intrigues of the stone cult, or... There's even a cohesive plot in there somewhere!
The book moves along nicely, but Connolley's formal style of dialogue-within-dialogue takes some getting used to. This isn't a book you read half asleep in front of the TV. Concentrate, and your attention will be amply rewarded with clever gems of writing you'll find sprinkled liberally throughout this book.
I loved "A Great Place to Die". Read it for its metaphysical parody, for its seductive lyricism, or, heck, just read it for fun...
...and wait until you find out how it ends!

Beautiful bookMy only minor critique is that some of the captions are slightly confusing. I spent a few minutes wondering where the 'train' was in the picture of the train station, only to reread the caption and realize that they are referring to a theoretical train and not one in the picture. Also, the little intro picture in the Newburyport section is really the southern point of Salisbury Beach, which also puzzled me a bit. Both minor points, but thats why only 4 stars from me.

A tribute to Mount Katahdin and Baxter State Park.

Excellent Balance of Detail/Fun, History/GeographyA nice reference whether you live here, work here, pass through, or plan to visit jsut once.
The text is well-written, informative, and readable.
The only down-side: it was published in 1992 and is getting a bit dated. The listings, particularly the restaurant list, are particularly vulnerable to the aging process. In the Village, the restaurant list will be outdated by tomorrow...

new york 40's thru 60'ssome great images in this book and some not so great images in this book
